Ride on the Most Luxurious Train in the World

October 31, 2017

The most luxurious train in the world has become so popular that it's actually sold out until 2018. The Shiki-Shima in Japan has already broken a record for it's top speeds of close to 375 miles per hour last fall. It's the ultimate train if you want to do some sightseeing while enjoying luxurious accommodations.

The Journey

This sleeper train isn't doesn't even compare to any of the trains that we have seen over the decades as it's a lot more luxurious than the rest. It departs from platform 13 ½ at the Ueno station in Tokyo and takes passengers on a trip through Japan. The station was created just for the train. Trips range from 1-3 nights. While on board, guests can see the mountains, sea and rice fields passing by. Depending on the journey, there are stops at vineyards, ateliers and ancient temples and shrines. Upon departing, the train travels north to Yuzawa, which is a mountain resort. Despite the fact that this train can travel at record breaking speeds, its top speeds for these journeys is just at 70 miles per hour.

Accommodations And Dining

There are 10 coaches that make up this train that runs on 3 foot, 6 inch gauge lines. Five of these coaches contain standards suites with three to each carriage. The other two are deluxe suites that feature a wooden bath. In total there are 17 suites and the train can accommodate 34 passengers. This allows for an intimate experience where passengers can get all of their needs met, and then some. Each suite has either a second floor loft or a working fireplace. There are observation cars for those passengers that want a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Another thing that has passengers talking is the food. It reflects whatever region the train is currently passing through. Katsuhiro Nakamura, the first Michelin-starred chef in Japan, created the kaiseki-style menu. Uniformed butlers will serve each guest.

The name of the train means Island of Four Seasons so it's not surprising that this train offers passengers a very luxurious experience throughout the entire journey. It does comes with a hefty price tag though as rates range from $3,000 to $10,000 a night. While you will have to wait a few months before a spot on the train will open up for you to take a ride on it, you can be entered into a lottery for a trip in the future if you fill out an online form.
