Celebrating Chinese New Year in Hong Kong

December 04, 2017

Chinese New Year in Hong Kong is nothing like you've ever experienced before. This 15 day event starts on Friday, February 16, 2018 this year and is the Year of the Dog. Here's what to expect from this lively event.

The date of the festivities changes every year because of the Lunar Calendar. Some years Chinese New Year starts in January while other years it starts in February. It all depends on when the Lunar Calendars first moon is. This event is sometimes referred to as the Spring Festival, which is rather fitting since many festivities happen during this time. Chinese New Year ends with the Lantern Festival on March 2. This festival is a grand celebration in its own right and is the perfect way to conclude all of the festivities. These are some of the main events that take place:

-Hong Kong's Chinese New Year Parade. All of the festivities start with this parade. It features everything you'd expect out of a parade, but with a Chinese twist. This includes more than 30 colorful floats, dragons, Chinese dancers and acrobatics. There's also a lot of firecrackers as they are supposed to ward off evil spirits. The parade generally takes place during the evening and goes down the streets of Tsim Sha Tsuion.

-Fireworks. They love fireworks in Hong Kong so its not surprising that a Chinese New Year celebration would feature quite a few of them. On February 17 and 8pm visitors from near and far will flock to the Victoria Harbour area to see one of the world's most incredible fireworks displays. Barges and pontoons will be stationed in the middle of the harbour to launch all of these fireworks that will be a variety of different colors.

-The Dragon And Lion Dances. Throughout Hong Kong there will be many different carnivals that occur around the city. During them, Dragon and Lion Dances will often occur. This tradition dates back over a thousand years and features gongs, drums and acrobatics.

The Year of the Dog will conclude on February 4, 2019. Those that are Dogs tend to be loyal and kind. They are always there for others in need and are more interested in the happiness of others than they are with wealth and success. Those born during a Year of the Dog will have different personalities traits based on their birth year. These include:

-Years 1910 and 1970, Metal Dogs. They have high expectations of themselves and those around them. They are also very committed when it comes to virtually anything that they do.

-Years 1992 and 1982, Water Dogs. Those born in these years lack confidence on their own. They like to be around others and have a loving and relaxed nature.

-Years 1934 and 1994, Wood Dogs. They like to be in a group as well and can be timid. However, once they warm up they are very faithful.

-Years 1946 and 2006, Fire Dogs. Those born in these years are leaders. They are charismatic and like to be on the go as much as possible.

-Years 1958 and 2018, Earth Dogs. They are grounded and trustworthy. They also tend to be fair and supportive.
