Exploring the Kingdom of Bhutan
Thimphu
This is the capital city of Bhutan and one of the highlights of this area. Some traditional items of the Bhutanese can be seen here with it's statues. In particular there is a roundabout that features the statue of Thimphu. Since there are no traffic lights policeman direct the traffic around it. The almost 167 foot Dordenma Buddha statue is located on a hill that seems to overlook the city. You can't miss it because of its size and its bronze coloring. An interesting feature of many of the government buildings in Thimphu is that they are housed in former monasteries and fortresses.
Punakha
The former capital of Bhutan, Punakha, has breathtaking scenery with it's beautiful mountainside. Visitors are often taken aback by the prayer flags that are installed almost everywhere. They are a reminder for locals to say prayers often. A must see while in Punakha is the Palace of Great Happiness, Punakha Dzong. It was built by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal back in 1637. This fortress contains his embalmed body as well as carvings, frescos and artwork. Chimi Lhakhang, is also located in Punakha, is a fertility temple that receives visitors from near and far. Many women, who want to have a child, come here to worship it.
Paro Valley
Those who visit Paro Valley usually do so to see Tiger's Next. This iconic landmark is Bhutan's most sacred site. It was built in 1692 and has been used as a place of pilgrimage for monks and Buddhist saints. Today it is one the most visited attractions in Bhutan. The mountain it's located on is a little over 10,236 feet high. Once at the temple, visitors can see an incredible view of the valley below filled with rhododendrons. If you'd like to take pictures you?¢??re out luck as there's a security checkpoint located at the temple's entrance that requires you to surrender your phone or camera before you gain admittance.
